SMALL MAMMAL TRAPS
All our traps are ‘live catch’ traps which should
be checked regularly (at least every 12 hours)
and water, food and bedding provided where
appropriate. A handful of straw will provide
adequate bedding in most circumstances.
Foods should include a mixture such as
chopped apples, carrots, seeds and blowfly
pupae (available from fishing suppliers).
Pre-baiting the trap may result in higher catch
rates. Knowledge of the local habitat is also
beneficial as trapping will be most successful
when traps are located near to runways or
burrows. Surveyors should be trained in
accurate species identification and the safe
handling of small mammals, particularly for
Longworth Mammal Trap
ÌAdjustable trigger sensitivity
ÌLarge nesting chamber
Sherman Folding Trap
This cleverly-designed aluminium trap is strong, lightweight and corrosion-resistant. The
large nest box has plenty of room for food and bedding to ensure that the trapped animal is
comfortable until release and can be positioned at an angle to prevent rain from entering.
ÌFold flat for easy transportation
The modular design of the trap means not only is it easy to clean, but the tunnel can be
placed inside the nest box when not in use for easy carriage and compact storage. The trigger
sensitivity is adjustable.
The nesting area is 140 x 65 x 85mm. Total trap length when set 250mm. Available with or
without a small hole in the trap which allows shrews to escape.

Legal requirements - Some small mammal species are protected by law (e.g.
shrews in the UK) and you must obtain a licence from NE, SNH or NRW if you set traps with
the intention of trapping any species of shrew. Please ensure you are aware, and meet the
requirements specified, of any relevant laws in the country you are in.
ÌAvailable in a range of sizes
Sherman traps provide a safe and easy way to research small mammal populations and are ideal
for research and teaching. These easily-collapsible traps are lightweight and fold flat for storage or
expeditions. The trap works by use of a trigger platform which causes the door to shut when the
animal runs inside. Ensure that you choose a trap long enough for the intended animal, as tails may
catch in the strong door.
